3 secs off the win – Woolly Mamil Stourport, February 4th

This was my first circuit race away from Marsh Tracks. My team mates had warned me about the course which had two hairpins and a nice straight up hill.

I was a bit nervous and this showed in my positioning within the group. As the race progressed my confidence was growing and I was feeling strong. The race was neutralised at one point and re-started with 22 minutes to go. This meant that on the re-start the pace was high.

Two riders made a break and were extending their lead but I thought that I would remain in the pack where there were some very good second year U16 riders. This proved a good move as we picked the pace up and brought back the break away with two laps to go. I was now at the front of the pack setting the pace and enjoying riding my bike.

Round the last bend, I was in 6th position but my legs just didn’t hold out for the bunch sprint and I finished 3 seconds down off the lead.

Not bad for my first proper road race – lots of lessons learnt and confidence gained.
I was happy with my first race away from Marsh Tracks, and I hope I can have other good races like it in the year to come.
